今年徒步主办方选择北京作为起点，其含义比表面看上去的要深刻的多：

首先，他们考虑到2015年我和雪琳从北京徒步到杭州，通州正好是连接北京和杭州的大运河的终点；

其次，通州是北京政府在建的城市副中心，作为同是政府职员的我深有同感。

最后，这是由一群建筑师描绘的一个未来新城。新科技，解决气候变化的新思路，未来生活和办公的新方法。作为一名训练有素的建筑设计师，雪琳尤其感兴趣。

对中国速度尤其是基建方面的速度我们经常是发出赞叹之声。在西方国家，由于法律和条例方面的限制，一个规划都需要花费数十年的时间。而中国几年就可以完成。让我印象深刻的是通州有別于其他的地方，规划的考虑层面已不仅仅是21世纪了，他们已经考虑到了22世纪的需求了。到那时会是怎样的情形呢。

最令人瞩目的是人们出行的方式的改变。深达四十米的地下汽车通行网络隧道。还有你期待的连接北京市中心和新机场的超级地铁系统。把地面的空间留给了骑车和走路的人，是不是很棒哦。

信息技术和超高速电缆将能够减少上班族在路上的时间，并提高工作效率。移动办公桌已成为时下流行语了。

建筑物的低能耗和运用再生资源的想法被广泛运用。设计蓝图在视觉上重点运用了大量的树木，看上去像是一个森林城市。

正在崛起的现代中国还有另一个慢慢显现的特点，那就是它与古老的历史相结合。比如，通州新城最中心处的一大特点是修复了49米高的佛寺。在过去，为了城市的发展，有些古村落可能需要搬迁。然而，在这里却设计成了城市围着三座古村落来发展。需要特别强调的是，在这里人们非常小心地保护古桥，运河的古码头，甚至是古陵墓，并将其列到新/旧城区的八大古景之中。

当我们沉浸在古建筑和古村落的平和和宁静中，讲解员说到我们将在此建造世界上最大的主题公园，并由环球影城运营，占地5.4平方公里。我们不禁发出惊叹，这个想法是从何而来呢？会不会有《终结者》、《木乃伊》、《怪物史莱克》、《蓝调兄弟》在这里上演呢？它会如何与这座城市的“主题”相结合呢？

接着有人告诉我，虽然主题公园将由环球影城运营，但是游乐设施中会有中国特色的传统文化元素加入，我如释重负。我不知“如释重负”在这里是否用得恰当？佛罗里达的迪士尼乐园和环球影城陪伴着我们成长，家人们都十分喜欢在那里度过的每一刻。我个人认为，东西方文化需要相互学习，因为人类文明已经出离了平衡。为了纠正这些不平衡，需要双方文化真诚清醒地面对自己，同时又向对方开放。我认为通州正好契合这点。

The choice of starting point in Beijing by our hosts had deeper meanings than might first appear:

First, they considered that in 2015 Xuelin and I had walked from Beijing to Hangzhou and Tongzhou is the end of the Grand Canal which connects Beijing and Hangzhou;

Second, Tongzhou is the new centre being built for government in Beijing which was a connection to myself as a politician and finally, it was a new city designed by architects to be fit for the future–new technologies, new solutions to climate change, new ways of living and working and this was of great interest especially to Xuelin as a trained architect.

Normally we marvel at the speed with China builds and develops infrastructure. A process which would take decades in the West due to planning restrictions and legal challenges can be delivered in China in a few years. Tongzhou is different because what is most impressive is the level of thinking which has gone in to delivering a city fit not just for the 21st century but also the 22nd. So what does that look like?

Most noticeable is how people move around is essentially moved 40 metres underground with a network of tunnels for cars and, as you would expect, super fast metro train systems that connect to Beijing Centre and the new International Airport. IT connectivity and superfast cables will ensure workers of the future need to travel less and can work more efficiently. Mobile working–hot desking are the key terms.

Great thought has been put into designing low energy usage in building and a use of renewable energy sources. This is highlighted visually by trees, lots and lots of trees, in fact it looks as if it is a city in a forest.

Another feature of modern China which is slowly emerging is a coming to terms with its ancient past. The central feature is the restored 49 metres high Buddhist temple. Whereas in the past perhaps ancient villages were required to make way for progress, here the city is actually being designed around three ancient villages. Great care is taken to point to the fact that great care is taken to protect ancient bridges, wharfs from the canals even ancient tombs as part of the eight ancient landscapes of the new/old city.

Then, just when you were being brought into peace and tranquillity （tranquility）our guide announces and  we will be building the largest theme park in the world to be operated by Universal Studios covering 5.4 sq km. Wow! where did that come from? Would there be a Terminator Zone, Mummy, Shrek and Blues Brothers rides in the new citadel. How would that fit with the ‘theme’ of the city.

Then I am told that although it will be operated by Universal Studios the rides will have ‘ChiThen I am told that although it will be operated by Universal Studios the rides will have ‘Chinese characteristics’ and traditional cultural elements. I am relieved. ‘Relieved’ is that the right word? My family have grown up going to Disney Land and Universal Studios in Florida and we have loved every moment of it. I suppose its just that I think as well as the East learning from the West, I hope the West can learn from the East. I believe that our human civilisation(civilization) has got out of balance. To address that imbalance requires both cultures to be true to themselves whilst being open to others. I think Tongzhou hits the mark in that quest.
